Recycling with TerraCycle

We are really pleased to be a collection point for TerraCycle, an an innovative recycling company that specialises in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste*, using only circular methods (reuse, upcycling or recycling) for repurposing waste collected through various programmes.  TerraCycle will never landfill or incinerate the waste collected through their programmes.

*see article at the foot of this page.

Students who wish to become involved in this recycling programme should speak to Miss Hurrell or Mr Parry.

Currently, the college is a collection point for the following programmes:

Writing instruments:

All writing instruments (except for wooden pencils and chalk) are accepted.  Any brand of pen, felt tip, highlighter, marker, correction fluid pot, correction tape, mechanical pencil and eraser pen regardless of their composition.

Note that we do not accept glue sticks, erasers, rulers or other cutting objects that could disturb the recycling process. Please be careful not to include any of those items.

Crisp packets:

Crisp multipack outer packaging is accepted.

Please do not fold the crisp packets into triangles.

So that these items can be recycled properly - and in common with other household recycling - we would ask you to properly empty your packaging.

Collection Points

We welcome the whole community to use this collection point.  Our main recycling collection boxes are in the foyer of our main reception; this is the entrance by the two old horse chestnut trees at the end of the site near to Plainmoor swimming pool.  This entrance to the building is open from 7.30 each morning during school term time.  The building closes a different times each evening as outside organisations hire the facilities but it is never usually closed before 6 pm.  Parking is difficult during the day, so I would suggest coming either very early or late in the day (the staff carpark is usually full well before 8 am).  If you would like to check the time that the building will be open until on any particular day, you can contact the facilities management team on 01803 408844.

If your items are pre-boxed, please mark them for the attention of Miss Hurrell / Mr Parry.  These can also be dropped off during school holidays to our delivery entrance, which is accessed via the signposted lane at the Windsor Road end of Cary Park Road and is supervised by the facilities management team as above.

We have collection boxes for pens in most classrooms and extra bins for crisp, biscuits and snacks in our playground and dining hall.

More information about TerraCycle is available on their website: https://www.terracycle.com/en-GB

If you have any further questions regarding the programme within the college, please email: nosborne@thespirescollege.com

This interesting BBC article explains why some things are not accepted by local council recycling schemes.  You will see that many of these items are accepted by TerraCycle and that some of them can be dropped in via our collection point!
