Transition for entry into Year 7 in September

This page is for children and the families of children who will be joining us in Year 7 in September and will be updated with information as it becomes available.

We are very pleased that, with the easing of restrictions due to Covid-19, we can confirm that our face to face transition events including our Summer School will go ahead this year.  Below is an outline of our events and other information.

Transition Events

Our ‘Meet the tutor’ evening for parents and carers is on Thursday 24 June.  We have two sessions on this evening, 6–7 pm and 7-8 pm.  Parents/carers will only need to attend one of these sessions and will receive confirmation of their session details closer to the time.  It is very important that parents/carers attend the correct session, even if other people they know have been given a different time.  During the evening parents and carers  will meet their child’s form tutor and be able to ask any questions they may have.  They will learn more about being part of the college community, and be given information about the student transition days.  Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we can only accommodate up to two parents/carers per child on this evening.  Please contact Mrs Woodcock if this is problematic for you.  The children are not required to attend as they will meet their Tutors on the transition days the following week.  Please do not bring any other siblings or relatives.

The Transition Days for the children are on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 July.  The local primary schools know that their pupils will be here on both of their induction days and we will share a more detailed timetable with parents and carers at the ‘Meet the tutor’ evening.  We will provide lunch for the children on both of these days, but they are welcome to bring a packed lunch if they prefer.

Uniform

The deadline for ordering uniform is Friday 18 June 2021.  Uniform ordered by this date will be available for collection in week beginning 23 August to coincide with Summer School.

At this stage it is unclear what arrangements will need to be made to comply with social distancing guidance, so details of the collection dates and times will be published on the College website in August and these details will also be emailed to parents/carers who have made purchases via the College uniform shop.  There will also be opportunities in the week beginning 23 August to exchange uniform if different sizes are required.  There will be additional collection and exchange dates on 2 September and 6 September 2021.

Summer School

The aim of running this programme is to provide all students who will be joining us from primary school in September with an opportunity to:

  • meet their fellow students and begin to make new friends
  • become familiar with the school and staff
  • be more confident about starting school in September
  • begin to get back into the habit of learning after a long break
  • take part in some taster activities

Summer School will take place from Monday 23 August to Friday 27 August from 9 am – 2 pm each day and we would expect students to commit to the full week.  It is open to all students beginning Year 7 with us in September and there will be no charge for any of the activities. Throughout the week there will be a varied programme and the children will have different experiences each day.

Parents/carers have been sent a consent form that must by completed and returnd to Mrs A Woodcock no later than Friday 28 May 2020 if their child wishes to attend Summer School.  Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any bookings after this date as arrangements and staffing will need to be confirmed.

Students who have booked their place should arrive at our main reception at 8.50 am on Monday 23 August 2021 and wear casual clothing that is suitable for the classroom and creative and physical activities.  The College will be providing lunch for our Summer School students, however, they may wish to bring a drink and a snack for break-time.  Medication that is usually taken throughout the day or may be required (for instance, inhalers) should be handed in to reception on the first morning of Summer School.

The first day of the Autumn term and the childrens’ first day at The Spires College is Tuesday 7 September 2021.

Head of Year and Pastoral Support Manager

In September we have a new Head of Year joining the college: Ms Dorrian.  Ms Dorrian is going to be Head of Year 7 and we are looking forward to welcoming her to the college.  Our Year 7 Pastoral Support Manager will be Mrs Fisk.  Mrs Fisk has been working at the college for over 20 years and is on hand for any pastoral matter.

Our SENDCo, Mrs Kolek, is already liaising with primary schools to ensure a smooth transition for students who require additional support with special educational needs or disabilities.

If you would like to speak to any of these members of staff you can contact them by emailing:

If you have any queries regarding the Summer School or transition please do not hesitate in contacting Mrs Woodcock via awoodcock@thespirescollege.com or by leaving a telephone message during college hours by calling 01803 400660.
